Create a Homeschool Schoolroom in Your Home

A homeschool schoolroom has been an invaluable addition to my home, especially because I homeschool multiple children!

Where We Put It
We made our homeschool schoolroom in a room that was very underused in our house. It was a separate dining room but everyone always ate in the kitchen or the livingroom.

I've seen people get very creative when making a separate room for their homeschool. I've seen parents with children who each have their own room actually bunk their kids together and turn one of the bedrooms into their homeschool schoolroom. I've seen Dad's move their offices into their master bedrooms and turn their old office into a homeschool schoolroom. One family converted their garage and I even know a family that is building a homeschool schoolroom addition to their house.

What To Put Into a Homeschool Schoolroom

Shelving
In our homeschool schoolroom there are shelves for everything. There is a shelf for each childs individual books and workbooks. A shelf for art supplies. A shelf for paper, pens, pencils, scissors, glue, string. A shelf for science supplies and the microscope. A shelf for library books. A shelf for Mom's homeschool reference material.

Hooks on the Walls
Do your kids go to dance or play soccer? I have hooks on the wall of the homeschool schoolroom for each child's activity bag (soccer bag, dance bag, guitar bag, etc.) and it is stored there PRE-PACKED so that it can be grabbed as we're walking out the door. Additionally, since our family is a step-family (his, mine and ours), we have bags pre-packed for when the older children head off to visit their other parent for the weekend.

The Computer Desk
We have a computer desk with a computer, printer and internet access in our homeschool schoolroom. It is out in the open so that I can supervise its use. Additionally, the children have a sign-up sheet on it so that they can take turns using it without a big 'ol argument.

Stereo
We put a nice little stereo into the shelves in the homeschool schoolroom. We sometimes listen to books on tape, however, all the children enjoy soft, flowing music with nature sounds likebirds and waterfalls. They also like flute music. I've noticed that soft music like this is easy for them to read with.

Calendars and Schedules
We have our LARGE monthly calendar on the wall of this room that tracks where everyone in our family is going and when. I've also put up each childs lesson plan that contains what schoolwork and lessons each child has committed to do on each day. This can also be done on a great big bulletin board if you want too - but I don't particularly like bulletin boards because they collect clutter.

Art Gallery
On one wall I've created an "Art Gallery". I draped a piece of string from corner to corner and using clothespins I've attached artwork to it. When I need more space for more artwork, I plan on draping another piece of string, just lower and underneath the first. Like I said, I don't care for clutter, so every couple of weeks the Art comes down and only the stuff that is really special gets kept in a keepsake box. The rest gets tossed...sorry to the people who don't ever throw anything away.

Tables and Chairs/Reading Area
I would love to put a small table and chairs into our homeschool room, but the room is small and wouldn't accomodate it. Instead I've created a reading area out in the center of the room complete with bean bags, pillows and a throw blanket or two. This saves space as it can be completely picked up and the beanbags stacked in the corner in case the area needs to be used for something else.

How We Decorated Our Homeschool Schoolroom

Initially, I had the kids pick out a color of paint that they all mutually agreed on (not an easy task!). It was a light blue color called "breezy blue". They also picked out a lighting fixture that was silver with frosted glass. Because I have a small baby, my husband and I changed out the electrical outlets for safety outlets.

We then purchased some "peg-lock" shelving and painted it white. Next, we installed the shelving all along one wall in the room.

We purchased some silver hooks, located the studs in the wall and hung 'em!

We have hardwood floors so we picked out a beige flecked color of carpet and had it cut to the size of the room, then we had the edges bound. This was less expensive than an area rug and Home Depot handled all of the ordering and binding.

We painted our little computer desk white to match the shelving. Then we hung a couple of "floating shelves" painted white, above the computer desk.

The best part about decorating the homeschool schoolroom, however, was letting each child pick out a bean bag to sit and read in. We even found those "lap desks" that have a pillow attached to the underside so that the children can have a hard surface to write on when they sit in their beanbags. Interestingly, I wound up putting a hamper into this room also. We needed it to catch everything from socks, to towels, to sweatshirts. And of course, make sure you put in a trash can!

Here's How We Use Our Homeschool Schoolroom

I have our family meeting in our homeschool schoolroom every morning. We sometimes have "circle time" and sing a few songs for the baby (like "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes" or "The Wheels on the Bus..."). I'll also read to them during this time and sometimes give spelling tests or other memorization activities.

In the mornings and afternoons, the children will do a lot of their reading and some bookwork in the schoolroom on their beanbags.

Sometimes the floor is cleared and beanbags stacked when the children want to spread out and play a board game.

And of course the computer is always on because there are four children who have to take turns.

Finally, because everything for "going somewhere" is packed up and in this room, the children will get ready there. Raiyna will get her cleats on for soccer and Merrin gets her tap shoes on for dance. Quintin practices his guitar and Zennin raps on his drumpad in the homeschool schoolroom. Finally, Lexi crawls around and tries to eat everything off the shelves and gets frustrated when she can't get her fingers into those electrical outlets...darn!

We hope you enjoy planning your own space to homeschool in your house.
