What are the Subjects Taught in Homeschool?
What exactly are the subjects taught in homeschool? It seems as though I am asked this question all the time. We actually teach a LOT in homeschool. I recently read that the average child in public school recieves 1 hr. and 34 minutes of academic instruction per day. The remaining time is spent on order and organizational activities. You know, roll call, passing out pencils, collecting workbooks, etc.
We Teach More Subjects in Homeschool
Actually, the subjects taught in homeschool are nearly the same as the subjects taught in public and private schools. Actually, I'm willing to bet that more subjects are taught in homeschooling than in public or private schools.
Parents Have More Time Per Child
Why is this? First I believe it is because we have more time per child. Before my son came out of public school, he was in a class with 32 other students. Even though they were all in the same grade, they were all at very different levels in their classroom subjects. Now, everyone asks me HOW I can possibly homeschool 4 children...and I tell them that if a public school teacher can teach 32 kids, then I surely can handle 4!
Parents Know Their Kids
The next reason why I believe that more subjects are taught in homeschool is because we know our kids. We see what they need and can put an impromptu lesson into our schedule specifically designed for them. For example, I interject a lesson on computers into their writing lessons, or I add a reading lesson in the middle of History. And of course, I'm a walking dictionary and thesaurus so spelling and vocabulary make it into everything.
Parents Take More Initiative
The last reason why I believe there are more subjects taught in homeschool than in any other educational environment is because we take the initiative...well, most of us that is. Since I have been homeschooling I have been fortunate to develop a network of other homeschooling mothers. What I have noticed is because we are teaching *our* children, we more fervently pursue other ideas and curricula to bring into our homes. I have seen few public and private school teachers be such determined advocates for their classroom kids, while the homeschool parent shines in their resolve, fortitude and endurance in obtaining the best possible education for their children. Parents have a natural, and albeit, biological, propensity for this which shows in the initiative that they take in their homeschooling endeavors.
List of Subjects
Here is a brief sampling of the subjects taught in homeschool. Look for resources and articles related to many of these subjects as our website grows. Where did I get all these subjects? From public and private schools, from other homeschool parents, from national and state curriculum and standards websites, from church, from College Catalogs (really!), from my kids (when they ask me to learn something specific), and from YOU - because you can always contact me and telling me that I'm missing something - and I'll add it and credit you on this webpage!
